Basmati - Sick/Raw

Basmati is the project of Brandon Graig, and the band just released a 9-song album called Sick/Raw. When we say this music is fresh, it was literally recorded two days ago. Basmati is another band affiliated with The Subterranea Collective. It looks like Basmati also played for a little bit as under the name Elders. Check out “Two Bones” for underwater vocals, Animal Collective loops, and techno/indie rock beats.

Lotus Grid - Kulektiv

Lotus Grid has released a new album called Kulektiv via The Subterranea Collective, and you’re going to want it to take residency in your speakers for the next few days. Ambient electronic sounds build slowly and intricately, and some of the loops help you zone out, hence the term “ambigaze” (ambient + shoegaze).* Joshua Franklin is the man behind the loops. The songs are both old and new, but it’s all fresh.

The first track, “Delta Tauri” has an ethereal, spiritual sense to it. The synth sounds like a church organ on a particularly elongated Baroque classical piece. The fadeout is executed in a very subtle way instead of merely a cop-out. The second track, “Indiana Fortnight,” makes use of found-sounds (like a taped conversation) and warps them into its own music. Franklin uses keyboards to achieve his sounds, with a “Sequential Circuits Six-Trak analog synth, a Mark I Rhodes Seventy Three and a Korg Electribe ESX, alongside using midi from Logic.”

Check out the textures in “Spirit” with the bass drum underscoring a bright organ.

Way, Shape, or Form - “Running Platforms”

Way, Shape, or Form just released a new full-length album, mastered by Josh Osborne of The Subterranea Collective. This album haunts as much as it caresses the ear drums. Bleeps and blips sit behind metronome electronic drums and a subtle guitar part. A project by Troy Gatrell, WaySOF uses Gatrell’s Korg for all electronic sounds, and enlists help from other Subterranea Collective musicians for the organic, person-made music. You know, guitars by Will Hooper of 8t88 and Ethan Gensurowsky from Midair and Yefim, bass by Reid LaPierre of Houdan the Mystic and Night Idea, and drums by Ethan Johnstone of Houdan the Mystic.

Come out TONIGHT (9/27) @ Gallery 5 for Way, Shape, or Form’s ALBUM RELEASE SHOW with Houdan the Mystic, The Rice Cakes (Providence, RI) and Navi! 7:30 pm, donations.

It’s finally almost here. The Subterranea Collective along with Sounds of RVA and Gallery 5 are INCREDIBLY proud to present the Subterranea Showcase Volume 01!

Two shows in one night, some of your favorite Sub/RVA bands and artists, and amazing original comic book art.

This is a big deal for us here at Sub; we’ve been hoping to put together a night like this for a long time (since we started Subterranea) and September 7th is finally the night. We hope all of you guys will come out and join us.

Gallery 5 Show
The first show of the night will take place at Gallery 5 as a part of their First Friday’s season kick off. Houdan the Mystic, Brother Wolf, Way Shape or Form, and Cheyenne will be performing while original comic book art is displayed as an exhibit upstairs.

Bug House Show
Directly after the Gallery 5 show, the party will be moving to the Bug House in Jackson Ward to continue the music. Phantoms, 8t88, Lotus Grid (first Richmond show) and Mirror Kisses (Harrisonburg) will be performing into the wee hours of the night.

Oh yeah, and both of these shows are absolutely FREE! We’ll be doing more of these in the future to feature the rest of our bands/visual artists, so keep an eye out for another in a couple of months.

Thank you guys so, so much for all of your support so far. This night is for you; as a thank you for being all about your music and art scene and doing what you can to keep it going. Reblog this, tell all of your friends and be here. It will be an amazing night.
